 Vaico Irrigation Development Project - Phase I under the Cooperation of Cambodia and China to be Completed

Vaico Irrigation Development Project - Phase I in Cambodia that funded by concessional loan of China is going to be completed. Currently, 90% of the total works has been completed. After the completion of the Project, 108,300 ha of farmland can be irrigated in the rainy season and 207,100 ha of farmland can be irrigated in the dry season.
Accompanied by several officials, H.E. Lim Kean Hor, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology of Cambodia, inspected the site of Vaico Irrigation Development Project to acquaint with the progress of the Project on April 24, 2015. H.E. Lim Kean Hor and others were warmly welcomed by the Project Manager and other construction staff when they arrived at the site. They accompanied H.E. Lim Kean Hor and others on the site inspection.
Spokesman of Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology Mr. Chan Yutha, who accompanied the Minister on the site inspection, said to the media that Vaico Irrigation Development Project is the biggest water resources irrigation project under the cooperation of Cambodia and China and it will be constructed by two phases. The total cost is about 200 million USD and it is funded by concessional loan of China. After the completion of the project, more than 300,000 ha of farmland in Prey Veng, Svay Rieng and Kampong Cham provinces can be irrigated.
As of now, 91.60% of the Project – Phase I has been completed, said Mr. Chan Yutha. The main contents of the project include the construction of a total length of 78 km of two main canals and the construction of a total length of 40 km of new river channels. Other structures include intake and regulating sluice, irrigation canals, drainage canals, bridges, culverts and sluices.
It is understood that Vaico Irrigation Development Project was commenced  on March 1 ,2013. It is a water resources project under the cooperation of Cambodia and China and it is biggest agricultural water resources project in Cambodia so far. The Contractor is Guangdong Foreign Construction Co., Ltd. and the Consultant is Guangzhou Wanan Construction Supervision Co., Ltd. After its completion, it can ensure the irrigation of local farmland and promote the development of local agriculture, significantly contributing to the poverty reduction and increasing the living standard of the people in Cambodia.
